Even reward-based training methods, though well-intentioned, are still rooted in remnants of the âtrain to obeyâ culture weâve inherited.Â
When cooperation depends on rewarding compliance with training, treats or behavior-fixing setups, it may look like connection…Â
But itâs still rooted in control, based on transactions, not trust.Â
We canât hide that fact. The nervous system always knows the truth. Your dog FEELS that. Your body FEELS that. We FEEL the difference between a real partnership and a transactional, controlling relationship. So does your dog. Thatâs when reactivity starts to take hold.
You and your dog deserve more than that. You deserve to enjoy a life built on mutual understanding, emotional safety, and deep trust. You already feel this. That’s why you’re here.
Living with a dog that is sensitive, anxious, easily over-aroused and acts out their big emotional reactions is HARD.
I’m so sorry that you’re going through this with your dog. xo
Let’s unpack what’s happening so we can get you freed from this overwhelming reactivity spiral, okay?
It’s a fact:
Our modern world puts a lot of pressure on dogs to comply with a rigid set of expectations, and a lot of pressure on us dog moms to make sure our dogs are obedient to a one-size-fits-all standard that so commonly results in crushed dreams.Â
But dogs so often collapse under that pressure to conform. That leads to big, baffling, overwhelming behaviors that looks like:Â
reactivity, anxiety, refusal to cooperate, stress-barking at everything, lunging and barking on leash, frenzied demanding action, obsessively chasing things, constantly snatching and eating random things off the ground, or from anyplace they can reach at home.
And then we get stressed, overwhelmed, and reactive ourselves. Now we’re caught up in a reactivity spiral that we just can’t seem to get out of, no matter how hard we try.
The Truth is that these behaviors are NOT training issues.Â
They are symptoms of deeper miscommunications, misunderstandings, unmet needs, unrealistic expectations ⊠and the result of an outdated approach that focuses on manipulating a dog’s behavior to achieve a misaligned standard of compliance.
The real transformation begins with a fundamental shift in perspective: focus on the root causes of reactivity, not merely the outward behaviors. This approach challenges us to understand what lies beneath the surface, fostering a relationship where our dogs feel seen, heard, and respected. And so do we.
The fields of Relational Neuroscience and Interpersonal Neurobiology offer invaluable insights, teaching us that our relationships shape our being. Through the lens of Polyvagal Theory and Regulation Theory, we understand that behaviors are clues that give us information about whatâs really going on inside. Â
We can enjoy a great life with our dogs without relying on training for obedience, behavior fixing, rewarding compliance, or on corrections for disobedience when we truly understand what’s happening for our dogs, and for us too!
Our dogs need to feel connected, secure and trusting, and we share these same needs. As social mammals, both humans and dogs naturally thrive on cooperation, which respects our individual needs, preferences, personalities, and past experiences.
Look, I get it. I understand the range of emotions that you’ve been going through to try to make your dog fit into our conditioned expectations and following the ârulesâ of training for compliance.Â
If you’re anything like me, and the women that are drawn to my work, you’re a smart, successful woman who is competent and confident in areas of your life, and youâre not afraid of reaching for hard things.Â
But this dog? What is happening? OMG!Â
You donât understand WHY you are continuing to struggle with this dog, considering all the time, expense, and deep devotion youâve put into making things right, for both of you.
And, I know that you hate that youâre getting frustrated, impatient, maybe even angry at your dog (and then yourself).Â
I know that you hate that your dog is anxious, reactive, and too dysregulated to respond to you and your efforts to be supportive … and I know that you really do NOT like feeling like you’re failing your dog, even though you’re doing so much.
I know you truly love your dog, but sometimes? You do not like them, at all. And youâre ashamed to admit, even to yourself, thatâs how you feel.
AND I also know that you’re committed to changing that!
The good thing is that also like me, youâre a lifelong learner, and you LOVE the idea of becoming the most brilliant version of yourself! Even knowing that personal growth is hard, you wonât give up, because you’ve done lots of hard things in your life, and you know you can do this too.
Please know that you’re not alone.Â
Iâm here to guide you with practical, innovative, simple solutions that drive meaningful change in your relationship with your dog, and in your life.
Iâve taught thousands of brilliant but struggling dog moms my simple, yet powerful and practical partnership lifestyle skills ⊠so they can feel confident and have the freedom to do all they love, together with their dogs.
“I considered returning Phalen to his breeder, but I just couldn’t do it. He was a part of me.
What do I say about a program that changed despair to joy? How do I put into words a gift so profound that everyday without fail, I thank my lucky stars?
Phalen and I were drowning in a sea of disfunction, miscommunication and despair. It sounds overly dramatic, I assure you I’m probably underselling it.
My dream dog had turned into a nightmare, my life was in turmoil and my dogs and family were miserable.
My dream dog was reactive to other dogs – all dogs, including our family dogs, to the point of living with barriers separating dogs in my home, and the reality of injury if those gates were breached.
My dreams of the life I expected to have with my dream dog were crushed.
I had spent thousands of hours, thousands of dollars and at least a few thousand tears trying to fix him.
I remember the first time we met with Kathy, it was the first time I felt Phalen and I weren’t being judged. I remember the shock that she didn’t see hopelessness, but potential. The biggest shock of all? Kathy didnât think we were broken! She said we were perfect where we were in that moment! Crazy, right?! More on this later.
The simplicity of Kathy’s program is deceptive. Communication, invitation, congruence, and possibility.
The deception is that we fool ourselves into thinking everything has to be complicated. We are looking for a magic wand, a fancy new technique, a magic word.
I’m going to give you the magic word for Phalen and I….
Communication.
Am I communicating clearly? Am I communicating in a way that is meaningful to both of us?
Do I even know what I’m trying to communicate?
Do I have a clear plan? Does that plan honor both of us?
Am I communicating hope or perpetuating despair?
The answer to all of the above is a resounding yes! Now.
The answer before Kathy and her program?
A big fat NO! I thought I was doing those things, but I wasn’t, trust me on this!
This program taught me to celebrate where my dogs and I are today. To live in this moment, holding space for where we are going, but not trying to live there now.
That’s what Kathy meant when she said we were already perfect.
Starting from the beginning, building a solid foundation so that we can stand tall with no fear of our foundation crumbling beneath us. It’s liberating, joyful and totally works! Who knew?
We’ve achieved things that I didn’t know were possible!
What I’m most thankful for however, is who we became as a team. Confident, fun and madly and completely in love with life and each other! It’s a pretty great place to be!! Â
One last thing. Â Â
I don’t live in fear anymore. I know that if I apply what I’ve learned, I have nothing to fear. Even if something goes wonky, I can get us right back.
I don’t fear a mistake, because it’s an opportunity to learn, an opportunity to grow and an opportunity to tell my dogs that I am willing to meet them where they are so that we can get where we want to go together, even if we need to take the long way!  The scenery can be pretty great when you take your time!â

đ One small shift. A whole new story.
She used to think: âNo matter what I do, itâs never enough.â
Now she knows: âI was always enough. Connecting deeply to my heart, to my dog, and to what really matters is what will make all the difference.â
How do I KNOW this? Why donât I have ANY doubt about whatâs possible for you and your dog?
Not only because I know what it takes and how to guide you ⊠but also because the dog moms that are drawn here, and resonate with my work, have the qualities needed to breakthrough old patterns and rewrite their story:
You are devoted, resilient and will not be defeated by all the things you’ve tried that have failed — you know that life’s wisdom and success comes from lived experiences that teach you what’s not right for you and your dog.
Youâre not afraid of the messy middle. You know that challenges are stepping stones that lead to your success, and pave the way for meaningful change.
Youâre willing to question the status quo, seeking deeper truth, even when itâs uncomfortable.
Youâre deeply practical, while also embracing innovation, intuition and new possibilities.
And when you have a trusted guide that can show you the way to blaze a faster, easier trail toward your dreams in a way that aligns with your core values âŠ
You commit to going all in â ready to transform the confusion-chaos mess into magic â because youâre a lifelong learner with a growth mindset, and eager to lean into a whole-hearted holistic approach with curiosity and excitement about the future.
Here’s what I know:
Brilliant Partners are kind, loving, calm, clear, confident, cooperative, respectful, trustworthy, attentive, and responsive…
And as you grow into that Brilliant Partner, these same qualities naturally blossom in your dog too.
With over 35 years of experience, Iâve helped thousands of dog moms with simple partnership lifestyle secrets that transform the way they connect and communicate with their dogs, including dogs that are sensitive, anxious, hyper, or reactive.
When I first said yes to my dog friends that asked me for lessons after seeing my success and the partnerships I had with my dogs on and off the herding field, I had no idea how hard it was going to become.Â
Many students struggled because their dogs, even though well trained to commands, couldn’t handle the natural environment of my farm. The dogs were easily over-aroused, and the dog moms had no connection with their dogs in the âdistractingâ environment of my farm. (or any similarly distracting environment, such as ordinary, real life)
My struggle to better help these devoted dog moms and their dogs quickly steered me down a new path of discovery. I began with questioning why my relationships with my own dogs were so different, so that I could help my students recreate what worked with their dogs too.
I needed to find out why I was having partnership success with my dogs ⊠in everyday life, on off-lead adventures, in farm work, and in training and competing in dog sports like agility and herding â without concern about âdistractionsâ that caused problems for so many others? And how did I achieve that without focusing on training obedience commands and without needing to micromanage my dogs?
My dogs CHOSE to be attentive to me without prompting, they loved when I called them, they enjoyed walking with me, they didnât get over-aroused and unruly around things that triggered most other dogs. They were willing and cooperative in all the ways that mattered.
This process was not a smooth and easy path for me. In order to better understand my students’ struggle with their well-trained but reactive and easily aroused dogs, I experimented with raising my border collie puppy with lots more training than was normal for me. That was a real eye-opener! Phoenix was my greatest teacher and the inspiration to develop my partnership lifestyle method â through blood, sweat and tears, as the saying goes.
My small farm in northern Illinois became a busy beacon for those with reactive, anxious and difficult dogs who had exhausted all other training avenues trying to fix their dog’s behavior and needed to start over — and for those that wanted to get started right so they never had to face reactive and other difficult behavior with their dogs.  đŸđ
We found that any breed/mix, any history, no matter how reactive or anxious — the heart and science behind my trusting partnership approach works in ways that training for compliance and behavior modification never did or will.Â
I had a proven, easily customizable method that worked consistently well for my students and clients, earning referrals from veterinarians, dog trainers, behaviorists, and from happy clients inspiring their dog friends to want THAT relationship with their own dogs.
Now, I was ready for the next phase of my work: to share the power of partnership with dog moms around the world. And, here we are, 15 years later!

đ One small shift. A whole new story.
She used to think: âMaybe Iâm not the kind of person who can really do this.â
Now she knows: âIâm exactly the kind of woman who doesnât give up on herself or her dog. Iâm ready for a different kind of support where I feel truly seen and heard.”
You donât have to feel completely ready.
You just have to know this matters too much to walk away.
Youâre not here by accident.
Youâre here because youâre ready for a new kind of partnershipâwith your dog, and with yourself.
I stand behind the Brilliant Partners Breakthrough with the BPA and RRI 12-week Intensive with all my heart. I am confident that you will be thrilled with what you experience in the program. I know that if you do the work you WILL be on your way to becoming the partner your dog deserves and your dreams will begin to manifest. If you decide in your heart that this program is not for you after doing the work in RRI Module 1, let me know before module 2 is released on April 12th, and I will refund your full tuition. No refunds after April 12th.
Here’s how to make this program work for you…
Each module of the course, we’ll focus on a key relationship rehab and partnership building strategy. I’ll teach the strategy in video classes that are released each Sunday morning, including your process for implementing with specific assignments. Don’t delay – do the course, the assignments and start taking action.
IMPORTANT: Plan for and Book Time for YOU and your journey.
Schedule an appointment with yourself for every week to do the module and assignment — trust me, you are so worth it!!
Plan for and schedule time for accountability:Â During the week, you’ll meet with your POD, a small accountability group and your partnership coach that will help you with the assignments and support you in developing your implementation plan, as well as help with any struggles you may experience.Â
Plan for and schedule the coaching calls:Â Then, I’ll lead a live coaching session to close out that week’s work and to help ensure your success. Participating live as many weeks as you can will truly move the needle for your success. Don’t let ‘lizzie’ tell you otherwise. Make it happen. Of course, replays will be available for you too.
Plus: Make Time to Connect: All along, youâll be fully supported with our our private RRI Facebook group: Get daily feedback from coaches; Connect, share and engage with your RRI Sisters as much as you like.
As you already know, our community is one of the best parts of my programs. So much support, sharing, celebrating…real friends are made and genuine, heartfelt support is freely offered.Â
You are not alone!!Â
But before we go any further, letâs also take an objective look at this program:Â
Fair Warning:Â This is not a âsit back and listenâ course. Itâs a hearts-in, hands-on, collaborative process where I lead you through each lesson and provide active and engaging exercises that will support your learning, integration and implementation. And you NEED coaching and accountability!
It’s called an Intensive … because that’s just what it is!Â
Who wonât do well with this program? Itâs not for anyone who wants to âkind ofâ commit. You canât get these types of results we KNOW are possible for you without your whole-hearted commitment to learn and to be coached and to implement.
Getting these types of results takes a commitment to succeed and a dedicated persistence to doing ‘the work’…along with a hefty amount of ‘you can’t stop me’ attitude that sends ‘Lizzie brain’ to the back seat when she gets scrappy about taking back control of the wheel.
RRI is for heart-led women who are committed to having a delightful partnership life with their dog/s and are willing to dive deeper into self awareness and personal transformation…
… and who are eager for the opportunity to work closely with me in this intensive program!! đ
If you are as committed as me and your team of partnership coaches are to your success … we are standing by, ready to guide you toward the life of your dreams!!
đ One small shift. A whole new story.
She used to think: âIâm afraid to hope again. What if I canât make this work either?â
Now she knows: âI have hope through the stories of the women who walked this path before me and made it work.â
Sometimes the first step is knowing that someone else believes in you (I do!) ⊠and sometimes itâs seeing others who started where you are now and made it happen. These women needed to âborrow beliefâ in the beginning too.
Scroll on, and meet them. đ
From Ulla ...
"I can't recommend RRI enough! It allowed me to work through various challenges with both of my dogs and really focus on leveling up our partnership.
The extra coaching in the weekly pod calls and the weekly coaching calls its self is worth it alone!
And then if you're lucky enough to be gifted with a one on one coaching call with Kathy - it's coaching like you have never experienced it. I made so much progress after our coaching call with an issue i had been frustrated with for 6 months.
In RRI, I've learnt so much about my self and my effect on my dogs and what changes I needed to make to transform my relationship with my dogs.
Itâs also an opportunity to get to know your BeePee sisters and make some new connections, and so many big WINS!
~Marika B
âRRI is a wonderful course. I chose Myrtle as my focus dog - and I went into the course in a similar mindset about Myrtle to the one I had when I joined BPA:
I didn't really get her, I found her hard to love and bond with as a result, and, at times, I just wasn't sure if I even liked her. It's quite hard to write that now because the understanding that I have of her needs nowadays and her personality, is completely different, as is my own confidence.
I just love her to bits and totally get what she thrives on in life. RRI was what turned the tide.
I had some wonderful coaching from Kathy in one of the weekly calls about Myrtle's behaviour towards Phoebe (growling) and the work that we did on personality types - both for ourselves and our dogs - was just incredible. I will be forever grateful. "
~Ros Sâ
"PODS are organized to support your journey week by week; those small groups meetings are a very safe place where we all learn more about ourselves and from each otherâs experiences with our dogs.
Partnership coaches are there to help you with your assignments so you can benefit fully from this intensive program.
It's so great to get to know each other, and this program meets our needs to be heard, to belong, and to contribute đ .
Kathyâs coaching calls are at the level of profound depth in this incredible program⊠and if you get the gift of a 1:1 coaching call with Kathy, that will play a huge role in your leveling up!"
Cecile Râ
"My biggest insight is that I am the key to our success.
My dog is who he is and he is perfect just as he is. As such I donât need to work on him, I need to work on me.
Since I began paying close attention to my thoughts and focusing on my process affirmation I have become a new person."
Emma B
âI feel as if I can identify problems (thoughts, situations) much earlier and think about them - why am I thinking/feeling that, how can I change this situation so my dogs will not be over-aroused, etc.
My goal going into the program was to work on my mindset part of my partnership with Cliff so I could come to believe that we can succeed, and I certainly achieved that."
Sara Râ
â"I understand my dogs a lot more and I try to think about their personality before I take any action with them to help our communication! I changed my mindset from I have to...to I love to!
Our play sessions are calmer, less barking, more fun! We are more in harmony since we are careful about the energy level of our activities. Thank you!"
Marie-Michelle Câ
"Like so many of us here in the BPA, doing the RRI with Dylan was a real turning point in our relationship.
Focusing so intensively on our partnership, and especially the mindset pieces, really helped me gain a lot of clarity and understanding.
Once I realised that I had been holding us in Dylan's old story of a 'special needs' pup he really started to blossom!
Tracy J
"In RRI, I set myself the goal of a few truly connected steps in the Walking Partner's Dance with my sensitive, reactive dog.
Well, what an amazing journey we had! I finally realized how I was unintentionally blocking our progress, and when I did, it led to so many beautiful, wonderful moments of connection together đ.
We went from Pow not ever feeling comfortable at my side at all, to her consistently choosing to just naturally walk by my side without me even inviting her!"
~Steph T
âRRI was a real turning point in my relationship with Monty. I moved from resentment to building unconditional love. The ahah moment came in a coaching call when I reached out to Kathy for help. I was looking for a quick fix and ended up with a mindset shift which continues to grow.
On reflection the bit I love the most which might have been the hardest at the time was writing my old story, then visioning the new one which we are now living today. Canât wait to work through this program again "
~Sandra Câ
"It not only helped us make a deeper connection with each other, it transformed my entire mindset so that I could make a deeper connection with myself. When I was able to break free from my own reactive mindset spirals, I was then able to be better co-regulator of safe, calm, and happy for my dogs.
By practicing and living the principles of brilliant partnership, my dogs and I worked through our challenges together as a family. As I learned how to be a better loving, responsible, trustworthy leader, my dogs also learned to be responsible, and make brilliant choices.
Love this program. Best choice of my life.
~Sarah
"I definitely have much more of a connection with my dog. I feel that our relationship has grown so much in the past few months..
I no longer need to use treats to ensure that my dog connects with me. Now, I can invite my dog and she wants to connect with me. We understand each other on another level and I believe that this is so much more important to our relationshipđ.
RRI is a fantastic program and the regular coaching calls are incredibly helpful. It is a very supportive and enlightening process."
~Joanna
âRRI will challenge your beliefs about your dog and yourself. It provides the tools needed for meaningful change in a very clear, step by step manner along with all the coaching and support you could wish for.
My dog's biggest struggle is her separation anxiety. She is now calm and able to relax while I am gone.
This program is worth doing and the benefits you reap will be greater than you can imagine."
~Kristin
"At home, Oakley used to go crazy barking at cars, people, and especially dogs going by. Now he is more apt to just look at me as I normalize the situation. My husband is not reacting anymore - A huge change from the barking and yelling that was the norm between them.
Before I started RRI, I took so many different classes and I kept saying that I wasnât getting to the root of the problem, wasnât dealing with his fear and insecurities. I felt I was contributing to his reactivity. I was in a spiral of guilt, helplessness, worry, and fear and I knew it affected him. After the old story exercise, I let go of so much anxiety.
At first, I was hesitant about the cost, but it was so worth it! I really love the program as a whole but the coaching calls were way beyond my expectation!
~Donna
"I like to feel I'm a good dog trainer and I'd been trying to help my dog's reactivity with training and counter-conditioning, and it did help but I could only get so far. I still felt she was exhausting and a lot of trouble, I had to always be ready when she saw or heard her triggers.
Now after just 12 weeks with RRI, I feel much happier and so is my dog. We're more of a team, life is much better. The coaching and support offered by Kathy and the other coaches is great, and has given me lots of insights and practical things to do which have really helped. And we're just beginning!
The approach is so different from anything I've seen. It was a real leap of faith for me, not at all my sort of thing! I liked the personality types, the Iceberg Illusion and emphasis on a balanced life. I had so many insights about how I'd held back from loving Taz properly because I found her so difficult. There is so much excellent value and support in this program!"
~Jan
âOur future is much brighter as we develop and grow in our ability to engage with one another. The program is a lifestyle not a training class. Before we began this program we were both frustrated and depleted. Now, just a couple months later, we are happy and I know we will continue moving forward.
Yes there have been behavioral benefit shifts, but those are the byproducts of what I would now call a healthier perspective that increases the balance in our hearts and minds.
The RRI program is a life changing experience for your dog yes. But also for you.
~Marcia
Stella talks about her reactive poodle...
âBela was not enjoying her walks and neither were weâŠI was so frustrated and sad. This partnership lifestyle is so much easier! It is the best decision I have made in years.â
~Ulla K and Bela Lisbon, Portugal
âMy rescue dog Charlie was totally overwhelmed at everything in his new environment. I was exhausted, humiliated and frustrated. After BPA, Iâm so happy and amazed at how wonderful life is with my dogs!â
~Sue Mimm, with Charlie and Leila Tyrol, Austria
âThere was a time when walks were difficult, unhappy and uncomfortable ⊠but today, our walk was perfect. I am here, standing on the building blocks of the Brilliant Partners Academy ⊠⊠all the insights and wisdom of classes, live coaching, sharing with and learning from fellow BeePees.â
~Marianne with Clover and Bowie Huntington, NY
âMy dream dog had become a nightmare, my life was in turmoil and my family was miserable. With our partnership foundation, life is liberating, joyful and totally works! Who knew?â
~Dee and Phalen
âI thought: Iâve tried everything, training classes, behavior sessions, reactive dog classes, I have nothing to lose. 10 months later, we all enjoying our Brilliant Partners lifestyle and Iâm so proud of my 3 fur kids!â
~Bettina, with Murphy, Mary and Bear
"After being kicked out of obedience class, I found Kathy Kawalec. Instead of focusing on obedience and training, we breathed a sigh of relief and began focusing on appreciating each other and observing and listening to each other. Life since is a daily delight with my girl!â

Absolutely not! In fact, you'll find that your level of success will dramatically increase when you add in this partnership based foundation! Remember ... our partnership lifestyle meets the core needs of our dogs ... and the training is the additional stuff.
One of my philosophies in life is to make choices on how to spend my valuable resources like time and money, and choose where my dreams can be nurtured, and I can live the life I envision. I hope you do the same.
Yes, You will need to devote time to watch the video lessons, and catch the coaching calls live or on replay...
Remember: a partnership lifestyle is just that - no need for special training sessions, setups and all that. I want to spend my precious time enjoying my life ... not struggling with unnecessary training ... and I want that for your too. And you have 24/7 access to the entire program for as long as you're a member, so you set the schedule that works for you!
Replays!! Many of our BeePees catch the replays - it's so convenient ... and you get to choose what time is best for you.
Yes. All of our courses, replays, masterclasses, workbooks etc are organized for easy access inside of our members HUB...a special website just for my members to enjoy! That said, there are easy ways for you to join our community discussions which are AWESOME without getting sucked into endless social scrolling. There are apps to help you with that, so that you only go directly into the BPA page. It's worth it, really!! But it's also ok if you don't. xo
