Tresa Fleck
A Transformation Story
Meet Tresa…
“I love my dogs and if doing this herding thing means I have to scream at them and throw things at them, well, it might not be for me…”

That’s what Tresa felt about her herding experience with her border collie Fleck.

We did well and acquired a few titles on ducks in the beginning, but something important was missing…”

She loved her new herding pal and had big dreams, but quickly hit a wall.

“My intense little BC was a rocket and I was in a constant state of reaction verses being in charge of the whole thing.”

Fleck would run straight up the field and bring sheep as fast as he could.

He wouldn’t listen. Wouldn’t stop. Wouldn’t slow down.

And what started as a dream quickly turned into a nightmare that lasted for years.

…Lots of lessons with several different trainers.

…Many clinics with ‘big hat experts’.

…Private training camps…

You name it, she tried it, putting her heart full into it.

And yet…Nothing seemed to work.

If anything, it only made the situation worse.

She kept getting the same advice that never worked for them…

“They all said the same thing: ‘You’ve got to make that dog listen to you. He has no respect for you at all’.

Since most trainers felt that Fleck was “blowing me and them off”, he was subjected to some “less than positive” methods.

I was frustrated at the lack of progress and the fact that I was being expected to be a “ruler with a harsh hand” and that just wasn’t me.

ULTIMATELY, THAT THING CALLED ‘TRUST’ WAS LOST…

Now fast forward to today and their partnership has blossomed into a fruitful one … Fleck has become the ‘go-to’ stockdog on the farm.

And, they successfully compete at the Pro-Novice level at USBCHA herding trials – something she thought they’d never be able to do!

So how did all this happen?

Two words…

Trusting Partnership.

By starting over from the foundation up, the rest of their journey became much easier.

For Tresa, it was all about working on CLARITY and getting very clear about what she needed from her dog and very clear about communicating that to him.

She instilled loving leadership without being harsh or corrective, but rather with calm confidence, trust, and patience.

Tresa says: “Kathy quickly helped me realize that the breakdown in our relationship was that I didn’t have a clear picture in my head on what I really wanted Fleck to do – every step of the way.

What would it look like if he left the post in a perfect manner? What would it look like if he kept his shape perfectly when on the outrun? What would it look like if he had a perfect lift? What would it look like if he had perfect fetch down the field?

I’m not saying that he actually needed to be perfect, but if I didn’t have a clear picture of how these tasks should be performed perfectly, how was I supposed to communicate to him what I wanted him to do?

All those years I went to trainer after trainer and clinic after clinic trying to “fix my dog” and all the while I just needed to fix ME…and our PARTNERSHIP!

Kathy’s Herding Partners program completely changed my life!”

If you're like the rest of us who love this program:

• You want a deep, trusting partnership with your dog so you can finally resolve your training struggles. Your dog is smart, and that means trouble sometimes! You’d like to learn how to really communicate with your dog and develop a trusting partnership that can help you resolve training struggles AND help you deeply connect so you can enjoy the life you’ve dreamed of with your dog … and have success in everything you do together: work, play, life, sports.

• You want to get started with herding…the right way.
You’ve seen what herding magic can be like, and you are excited to get started with this new adventure with your dog. You know that having the best possible foundation is what will lead to the success you dream of. And you know that having an experienced coach with a proven system that is based on Positive Partnership to guide you makes perfect sense. You’ve seen and heard about trainers and methods where the dog tries to get away because they are so intimidated, or that cause a dog to get frantic in their work … and you’re not going to let that happen to you and your dog.

• You want to re-start herding…and fix your foundation.
You’ve already started herding with your dog, but it’s not going so well. You’re confused. Your dog is confused. You’re stuck in this cycle of frustration that your dog clearly doesn’t like, and you don’t know what to do. You realize that you need so much more information, and that you don’t really have a good foundation to build on, so you are committed to fixing that. You have plans and dreams, and you are eager to start in a new and better direction.

• You want to have greater success at herding trials … you’re ready to end the struggle!
You sometimes walk away from your runs, head down, holding back the tears, because you KNOW your dog is better than that. YOU’RE better than that. You’ve worked hard, trained hard, and yet, you just can’t seem to get the results that will take you to the next level. You know that having the best possible foundation is what will lead to the success you dream of…you thought you had that…but it’s just not working out the way you want.

The Framework:

There are 5 Core Elements that Unleash the Power of Partnership:

1. Start with an intention to deeply and intuitively Communicate with your dog. To dialog … to truly listen with all of your senses, all of your being, to what your dog is telling you.

2. Strive for Clarity as you interact with your dog. Get really clear about what you want, and about how your dog needs you to teach this skill. Get profound clarity with the 3 Clarity Questions.

3. Be a loving leader in the dance of your life together. “The Dance” and the 3P’s enable you and your dog to become Competent at being attentive and responsive to one another…

4. Foster a deeper, heart-to-heart holistic Connection with your dog. This means that you and your dog strive to become balanced mentally, emotionally and physically…and that makes ALL the difference.

5. Develop a foundation of true Collaboration with your dog that becomes your cornerstone for easily transforming any struggle that crops up into brilliant possibility for success.

The 5C’s Formula Teaches YOU to:

• Be a master communicator…both sending and receiving crucial bits of information quickly and easily. That translates into smooth, flowing dialog between you and your dog for the best training sessions and the best runs. Ever.

• Master your own mental focus and mindset…so that you stay focused, stay positive, stay on track to meet your personal goals and milestones…and help you and your dog to reach your True Potential.

• A system for assessing your dogs skills, attitude, mental and physical conditioning as you train. This helps you to you know: when to ask for more, when to back off and when to move on to the next phase of training. I call this the ‘Success Maximizers’ … and you will too!

Master balance with holistic tools. Your dogs physical, mental and emotional balance are key to your training and performance success.. Your own physical, mental and emotional balance not only helps you to be your best … and your balance (or imbalance) strongly influences your dog.

• Core dog training principles that apply to every dog sport, every kind of dog, every type of situation. These core principles are the foundation for all effective dog training, and they take you way beyond simplistic ‘positive training’ and into the deeper, more effective and satisfying ‘partnership’ as the driving force for all dog training and competition.

RE: The Herding Partners Academy

Dear Brilliant Lover of Herding Dogs,   😉

I’ve had a dream about building this Academy for a long time now. I see it as a place where people who are smart, conscious, committed and passionate about being the best they can be for and with their dogs can learn, grow, share, and celebrate…together.

If you’ve ever had that feeling that you wish you could connect with someone who really understands you, your dog, your struggles, your challenges and your victories … this is the place for you!

The 5C’s are like words to a writer … you use them to create the core layer for a magnetic bond and trusting partnership with your dog.

And, just like the layers of first learning to write baby sentences, then short paragraphs, essays and full stories that articulate your ideas and thoughts …

… your communication skills get stronger and you are able to dialog with your dog with ever-increasing levels of clarity.

The results of this layering and dialog process are astounding!

Where you previously had a dog who tuned you out in the face of distractions, you now have a dog who is attentive and responsive as a result of YOUR enhanced ability to understand, and to communicate in a way that is so natural and comfortable for your dog. It’s as if your dog is thinking: “finally, I can understand what she wants, and now we can work together to figure out how to do this!”

The teachings in the Herding Partners Academy are not a one-size-fits-all “follow these precise steps, in this exact order” method … it’s a journey of communication, connection, clarity, competence, and collaboration with our dogs. Even when life’s lessons are difficult, (as they often are for us and our dogs) trust in our teacher and feeling our teacher’s belief in us, makes overcoming our struggles and obstacles smoother and easier.

THAT’S the life experience that we want to provide for the dogs we love so much … and who are so very willing to learn and to forgive our fumbling mistakes and try again.

You’ll be amazed at how quickly this natural communication creates willingness and cooperation with your dog, decreasing the overall need for training … and accelerates the training process dramatically.

And, when you add in OUR Partnership … that’s ME, partnering with YOU … as your teacher and mentor … as your coach with my ‘skin in the game’, committed to doing my part … there is no doubt that you are on your way to brilliant partnership with your dog.

In the Herding Partners Academy, you’ll be studying the true nature and culture of herding dogs that will lead to a solid foundation for training, partnering and performance.

This natural, holistic approach will allow you to gain insight and understanding of your dogs, bringing communication to a whole new level.

With over 35 years experience in training and competing with both horses and dogs, and 20+ years of holistic dog-centric teaching and coaching … I specialize in establishing great working partnerships between people and their dogs.

Successfully competing with my border collies at international-level sheepdog competitions and consistently qualifying at the top tier in North America, I am passionate about sharing what I’ve learned about the nature of herding dogs, how to train through partnership and trust, and how to successfully compete.

Through this program, you will take away better understanding and effective communication between you and your dog. You will learn how to be focused and present while interacting with your dogs, and how to use your body language, posture, and expressions to easily influence the behavior of your dogs.

Your dog is smart, loving and loyal.

Your dog wants to know what pleases you. Your dog is a whole being, complete with a mind, full range of emotions and motivations.

Your dog is born to be your partner.

You are smart, loving and willing to figure this out.

You don’t want to be domineering, or alpha.

You want your dog to LOVE to listen. To LOVE to work, play, train … to be your eager and willing partner in all you do. Right?

You are now at a fork in the road …

Do you continue down the training path that has brought you to where you are today?

Or are you ready to be one of our future Herding Partners success stories?

It’s time to leave the one-way ‘conversation’ behind and build a true connection and trusting partnership with your dog…

Become the Brilliant Partner your dog deserves … so that together, you and your dog can reach your True Potential.

Join us! You’ll be so glad you did…and your dogs will be too!

Much love to you and your dogs,
Kathy xo

Sara Reiter and Rye

“I want to talk about the transformation from just a simple set of ideas and change in perspective.

My relationship with my (now retired) herding dog Rye was completely transformed from just reading one of Kathy’s articles on partnership.

We were both unhappy with the training experiences that resulted from constant judging – all the time, was Rye made of the right stuff? How come he would refuse to do what seemed to me to be the simplest things? Why did he sometimes run away from situations?

A couple of transformative ideas were that I needed to understand things from his point of view and that Rye and I were only going to be successful as partners.

It really did not matter in the least whether some instructor would have picked him as her next open dog, or why not!

As soon as I started trying to understand why Rye found things difficult, he was very happy to communicate with me about what he felt he could and could not do and we stopped having meltdowns in training.

I eventually understood that some of his problems were really physical, but when he was feeling well, he always gave me 100% – if I was giving him 100% of my attention and my faith. “

~ Sara and Rye

Bryn driving

“Killiebrae Bryn, a sweet and strong border collie with much natural ability for stock dog work, came home two years ago. In choosing Bryn my hopes were for a dog I could work on our small sheep farm and train both of us to participate in Stock Dog Trials.

My frustration and lack of understanding of how to work WITH my Bryn rather than AT her was interfering with any real progress.

We met Kathy a number of years ago but the distance to her home made connecting with her as a teacher difficult. Then we got the opportunity to have her here as she passed on the way to trials further west.

Those first few months taking on the dedication to consistently use Kathy’s method were an eye opener! Bryn began to really partner with me, a joy for both us. I can not find the words to describe the sense of growing accomplishment and skill as that partnership deepened.

Kathy’s ability as a coach is outstanding. I might mention I am quite a fussbudget about teaching competency. In my first career I supervised, managed, educated through classes and workshops. I understand the difficult task of teaching well.

Kathy is a highly competent stock dog handler and a highly competent coach and teacher.

The 5Cs structure is such a strong foundation for learning skill and developing partnership. This structure provided me with a comprehensive way to organize my goals, my process and kept me in mind constantly of the importance of partnering with Bryn. A strong foundation is in place.

We are communicating and working together to gain competence with the active support of extraordinary coaching.

I am committed to working manageable goals rather than jumping from step A to step Q! Stepping back and insuring I clearly understand both my needs and Bryn’s has made a world of difference.

~Jan and Bryn

Doyle and Erin

“I didn’t know this back then, but when a dog comes into your life it changes it.

Doyle’s birth was the start of a new chapter in my life. Doyle is a wonderful teacher. He taught me about a partnership of trust, understanding, and clear communication. He turned me into a dog trainer; the trainer of a reactive, high energy, highly intelligent dog in need of a job.

Together we enjoy training in herding and rally. He is my constant companion in all that I do and in the evenings likes to curl up next to me on the couch and sleep.

Of all the things Doyle and I do together, training in herding is what we love the most. It’s the single most difficult yet rewarding activity for both of us.

We’ve been training in herding and working on our partnership off and on for about four years now. In the beginning Doyle and I struggled with everything.

As a handler, it felt as if I couldn’t do anything right. At home I had taught him sit, down, come, stay and a few cute tricks.

But with sheep, it was as if I didn’t even exist. Our partnership of trust, understanding, and clear communication was pretty much non-existent.

I did not have the clarity about how to proceed when he got excited about the sheep and we lost our communication. I couldn’t even get him to sit at the gate when I asked him.

But I was not about to quit. I was committed and determined to make our partnership work. I wanted a dog I could trust and rely on in any situation. I wanted to build a trusting, long-lasting partnership.

There were moments when it was so difficult that I wanted to quit, but I was committed to Doyle. At times it felt like we took two steps forward and one step back.

At home, under circumstances that Doyle found stimulating, I worked on sit, down, stay, and come. We also worked on self-regulated impulse control. Little by little I started to see a change in our partnership.

I also started to become a better handler. I began to read the sheep better and make moves that made more sense to Doyle. As time went on I gained more competence about herding and this helped Doyle settle into calmer work on sheep.

And then just as we were making great strides forward Doyle’s autoimmune disease flared and he also shredded his ACL. In July of 2011, Doyle had surgery to repair the torn ACL and then spent months in rehab.

Then in March of 2012 we had our first herding lesson in a year. I was really nervous. I spent the entire week leading up to our lesson worrying about how it would go. Would we be the same heart-connected team we were a year ago? What if Doyle was a total knuckle-head and chased sheep around the pasture? What if I had forgotten all I had learned? I was really worried that Doyle and I wouldn’t work as a team.

Kathy and I talked about all of this and came up with a plan. Rather than just walking into the pasture and working, my plan was to reconnect with Doyle in the context of sheep.

We went back to basics. Sit/stay while I walked a little toward the sheep and then called him to me. Praise and treat. We also worked on flanks. I would walk on Doyle’s flank and then call him to me; squaring up in front of the sheep. Again, praise and treat. This helped Doyle and I to reconnect in the context of the work.

This then translated nicely to the work on sheep; because I was much calmer and confident so was Doyle. We now start all our lessons like this. It helps us both to connect and our work on sheep is always better!

As for the future… clarity is always something I will need to work on. Sometimes I just don’t know what the right move is. Other times I have trouble putting all the smaller pieces together into the big picture. But, there are days with clarity. I see the big picture. I make good moves. The sheep are calm and controlled.

For me, it’s about the work and the partnership with this dog I love… And that’s a beautiful thing.”

~ Erin and Doyle

Bruce and Nancy

“My dog Bruce is amazing. I know in my heart that he is a very talented dog. If you can’t see clearly that my dog is top notch, it’s because it’s ME obscuring the view. lol.

He may not be an easy dog, but trust me, he’s a great one.

…And then there’s me. Staying calm, focused and unemotional are states of being that I have to work on every time I take my dog to sheep. I get impatient and frustrated when things don’t go well. I love my dog, but I think dark thoughts about him in the heat of these moments – and I don’t like it.

This partnering, training, clarity thing — it does not come naturally to me. The tricky thing about training sheepdogs is that it LOOKS like a combination of mechanical skills and natural ability, all brought under command by a talented trainer. What it really IS, as it turns out, is a combination of partnership, collaboration and commitment to the process. Even the person who won the National Finals last year has described his relationship with his top dog as “similar to a good marriage”.

So the good news, for me, is that I WANT to partner and collaborate and commit and be clear. I’m certain that my dog wants this too. I have seen abundant evidence of this every time we have been able to bring these qualities to our sessions on sheep. Enter my friend Kathy Kawalec and the 5Cs.

I have found that if my dog and I listen to each other, our partnership will be stronger and we’ll have more success.

The 5Cs have given me a guide to focusing on the important aspects of work with my dog. I have changed my perspective from commanding my dog to focusing on communicating with my dog. I can see how being clear about what I want, with great timing and proper tone, can make all the difference to both of us. I have renewed my commitment (and enthusiasm) to a process that allows for learning on both our parts…and a vow to stop and take a breath when frustration shows it’s ugly face.

I have found that if we listen to each other, our partnership will be stronger and we’ll have more success. (now, when Bruce doesn’t take a cue, I am more inclined to reassess my sheep and situation rather than to demand blind obedience – not 100% on this but it’s a work in progress).

The 5Cs have given me a guide for how I want to be with my dog, whether it’s training in my field or competing at a trial. I must stay calm and focused in order to clearly communicate the objective of the work and execute the task with competence.

The reviews are in: we are having a lot of fun in our work. And this great dog of mine is doing great work with me.

I was ready for a methodology that could take my mind off of the dog I didn’t have and put my heart into the dog I do have.

Kathy’s gift for communicating a great method has given me a wonderful road map for building a better partnership with my dog. Lest you think that the 5Cs are a cure for impatience and frustration – don’t go nominating Kathy for the Nobel Prize just yet. I am not cured, but I AM using the 5Cs to change my approach to my training, my dog and myself.

I used to think that training a sheepdog was about having a dog that would do what you said when you said it. Turns out it’s about creating a champion working partnership with a partner that trusts you to ‘lead the dance’.

I now know that my dog and I can have a great partnership.
